Leading Universities and the Right to Award Academic Degrees
Last year, the Russian Federation gave leading universities the right to award their own academic degrees on a trial basis, and this prompted universities to create models for future implementation. What the new system will bring and what needs to be done in order to render it fully operational was the focus of the board meeting of the Association of Global Universities, held on February 12 at HSE.

Researching Modern Music
Alexandra Kolesnik, Junior Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at HSE’s Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities recently completed her post graduate studies in History and successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘Historical representations in British popular musical culture of the 1960-1980s’. HSE Vietnamese Students Visit Moscow Duma
On 7 February 2018, three Vietnamese students from HSE’s Faculty of World Economy & International Affairs and the Faculty of Law took a trip to the Moscow Duma as a part of the joint programme run by the Moscow Administration and the Vietnamese Embassy.
HSE Students and Alumna Awarded S&T Grants
On February 8, the winners of the UMNIK competition were announced. The programme, run by the Small S&T Enterprises Assistance Fund, promotes young researchers’ innovation projects. Two HSE students and one HSE alumna will receive grants of 500,000 rubles to carry out research and further develop their S&T projects.

Freedom, Not Coercion
A feeling of freedom and a sense of responsibility are directly related to one another. Scientists from HSE’s International Laboratory of Positive Psychology of Personality and Motivation, the University of Missouri and Omsk State University have become the first to prove this link in a study involving both Russian and American participants.
HSE Students and Staff Donate 87.3 Litres of Blood
On January 25th and 26th, the traditional Donor Day took place at HSE. The building on Shabolovka welcomed donors from all over the university, and over the two days, nearly 200 students and staff members donated their blood. This is 40 more donations than last year.

Research Priorities Should Depend on the Future Demand for Technology

The recently released report entitled, ‘Russian Science in Figures’, compiled by HSE’s Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, details the current state of science funding, the percentage of the population in scientific jobs, and scientific research. HSE’s School of Media Offers English-taught Courses
Last semester, journalism students and international exchange students were able to select two subjects taught in English: American Political Rhetoric and Journalism and International Environment. We decided to learn more about these courses from students and teachers.
